Launch meeting of NoE
The strong growth in the global demand for mineral resources and the difficulty in their supply arouse renewed interest in mining operations. While in developing countries, mining is experiencing a continued growth stimulated by the basic needs of the population, in the "post-industrial" countries, mining projects could (re)-emerge in a context where contemporary problems generate new issues previously unknown. Locally, the development of mining activities can disrupt fragile balances and social acceptance of the population regarding potential negative (real or perceived) impacts is neither naturally nor spontaneously acquired. These issues must be taken into consideration both by the mining companies developing new projects, anxious to be able to invest in a peaceful context, but also by public authorities with the aim of ensuring the long-term sound management of the country. The notions of "responsible mining", "green mining" or "mining in circular economy" appear and raise questions about the possible trajectories of these objectives, their practical translations in different contexts, and how to develop governance and consultation throughout the mining project life cycle.

In June 2016, the four French High Education Institutions, Nancy School of Mines, MINES ParisTech, Ales School of Mines and Nancy School of Geology have teamed up to establish a Network of Excellence (NoE) named "Mine &Society". The aim of the NoE is to pool and develop multidisciplinary skills in Training and Research on matters concerning mines and quarries which are seen as engineering activities subjected to high technical requirements and through the relationships that these activities have with their natural and human environment.

Ceremony of June 20, 2016
